On April 25-26, 2025, I was at the historic Menger Hotel in downtown San Antonio to participate in the first annual Texas Revolution Rendezvous, a program of the Texas State Historical Association.
Friday night saw attendees assemble for the donor dinner in the exquisite Menger Ballroom; both the menu and the company were delightful. Following dinner, a live auction in support of the TSHA finished off the evening. We returned the next day to hear presentations relating to this year’s theme: the Campaign of 1835.
William Scott unraveled the confusion regarding the opening shots of the war with his talk, “The Gonzales Come and Take It Cannon: Which One?”
David Vickers followed up with his excellent study, “A Second-Rate Hog Pen: Lipantitlán and the Battle of the Nueces, 1835.” After a lunch break, attended returned to the Menger Ballroom for the afternoon session.
The Alamo’s own Ernesto Rodriguez III discussed the events leading to (and the importance of) the siege and storming of San Antonio de Béxar.
I spoke on the common Texian volunteers of 1835. All the presentations were well attended and well received. Several folks told me how “fun” the meeting was. That was not by accident.
I can hardly wait for next year’s Rendezvous.
Our thanks to Mr. and Mrs Forrest Byas for the event photos!
