While researching the San Jacinto Campaign, I examined the J. H. Kuykendall Papers in the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. There I uncovered, quite unexpectedly, Kuykendall’s narrative sketches of several pioneer Texians. Although earlier scholars mined portions of the collection, Kuykendall’s sketch of Travis has never before been published.
